A good eye surgeon is characterized by the fact that he has received solid training at several renowned clinics with experienced experts in Germany and abroad.

Up to a certain point, case numbers play an important role, as the surgeon's learning curve has been proven to increase over the first thousand cataract operations, for example. Accordingly, the complication rate decreases with every operation performed until it levels off at around 0.1%. Ideally, the surgical workload should be maintained in order to be able to maintain the routine at a high level of quality.

The surgical spectrum should be large enough that the surgeon can also select the operation that is the safest and most promising for you. For example, in patients with severe refractive vision, the implantation of an additional lens should be preferred over laser surgery. If there is age-related lens opacity, cataract surgery should be considered rather than laser surgery. A good surgeon advises against surgery if the chances of success are too low or the risk for the patient is too high.

As a surgeon, you have a certain responsibility towards your patients even after the procedure and should be available.

In the end, your gut feeling determines whether you feel you are in safe hands with your ophthalmologist and can entrust your most important sensory organ to him.

There are a variety of operations that are regularly performed on eyes. Medically necessary procedures differ from cosmetic or lifestyle procedures. While glaucoma or cataract surgery is necessary to preserve eyesight, for example, eyelid lifts and laser eye treatments are not absolutely necessary for vision. With the latter, you should compare your suffering with the risks associated with the procedure.

Depending on the nature of the procedure, different precautions must be taken. Eye opening procedures are usually performed under anesthesia, i.e. you should be sober six hours before surgery. You may take your medication as usual unless otherwise discussed (e.g. discontinuation of blood thinners).

For hygiene reasons, we ask you not to wear makeup on surgery day during all eye procedures. Depending on the procedure, the eyes are prepared with special eye drops several days or hours before surgery.

Depending on the nature of the procedure, different postoperative behavior is indicated. In principle, after eyeball operations such as cataract, glaucoma or laser surgery, it is important not to rub your eyes and ensure that no liquids such as shampoo or water reach the eye. After one week, all cuts are usually healed and you can shower normally again. Intensive sporting activities and applying makeup should only be resumed after two weeks. The outdoor pool, steam bath and sauna can be visited again without hesitation after four weeks.

Travel to high altitudes (e.g. flying, crossing a pass) is only prohibited after operations involving air or gas being filled into the eye (e.g. retinal surgery, corneal transplants) otherwise this is no problem.

Even if an operation is carried out by a surgeon, no matter how experienced and who operates with all due care to the best of his knowledge and belief, there is a risk of a complication during or after the procedure. However, suffering a complication does not mean that blindness must occur, as most problems can be effectively treated during or after the procedure.

We have already performed several thousand operations and, as far as we know, there has never been blindness since then. It is very important to us to inform you of all possible risks before the operation, to compare these with the benefits and to take all possible precautions to minimize risks.
