This overview is intended to provide clarity on how you should react to new eye complaints

Dr. Valéry Vinzent Wittwer

Eye corrosion/burn/scalding

Cleaning agents and other liquids often contain irritating chemicals or contain acids or alkalis. Such substances could seriously damage the eye.

foreign body in the eye

Small foreign bodies can get into the eye and get stuck on the cornea, conjunctiva, or under the eyelid.

Contusion on the eye

A blow to the eye can lead to inflammatory reactions and injuries inside the eye, which can have serious consequences.

> Call an ophthalmologist immediately

Sudden vision of lightning or black spots

Flashes and black spots are the result of vitreous tissue detachment and often occur as harbingers of retinal detachment. The prognosis depends on how quickly treatment is carried out.

> As an emergency, present yourself to an ophthalmologist the same day or the next morning

Sudden painless vision impairment

Immediate loss of vision can have various causes, which often also result from illnesses elsewhere in the body.

  • Vascular occlusions in the retina
A part of the field of vision becomes black
  • Inflammation inside the eye (uveitis)
Diffuse vision and slight reddening of the conjunctiva
  • Age-related macular degeneration
Seeing black spots in the center of the visual field and wavy perception of straight lines
  • retinal detachment
Seeing lightning, black spots, or a black curtain at the edge of the field of vision
  • vitreous hemorrhage
    Seeing dark flakes

> As an emergency, present yourself to an ophthalmologist the same day or the next morning

Sudden vision loss with eye pain

  • sudden increase in eye pressure (glaucoma attack)
Stinging or dull pain up to nausea with reddening of the conjunctiva
  • inflammation inside the eye (uveitis) or on the optic nerve (neuritis)
    Dull pain behind the eye

> Call an ophthalmologist immediately

Fluctuating visual acuity

  • dry eyes
The most common, harmless cause that is easily treatable
  • Blood sugar fluctuations
Cooperation with a family doctor or diabetologist is important
  • migraine
Seeing colorful flashes, dimmer vision and visual field failures

> As an emergency, present yourself to an ophthalmologist the same day or the next morning
